The History
In January 1970, the International College of Psychosomatic Medicine (ICPM) was founded by a group of renowned international physicians during the International Congress hosted by the Argentine Society of Psychosomatic Medicine and the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (USA). This was in response to professionals’ demand in the field for an international psychosomatic society. Even today, the theory and practice of psychosomatic medicine, as summarized and defined by founding ICPM member Z. J. Lipowski, is widely accepted.
In November of 1970, the ICPM Organizing Committee held their second meeting in Bermuda. The main objectives of the College were established, and guidelines were set for the First International Congress. During this meeting, the Governing Body was elected, and the Constitution of the College was drafted. Eric Wittkower, a revered academic at McGill University in Canada and one of the pioneers of psychosomatic medicine, was elected the first president of ICPM. The inaugural World Congress on Psychosomatic Medicine was held in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1971.
